Columbus' Mason named top rookie for December

01/02/2009 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason has been selected as the NHL's top rookie of the month for December.

It marks the second straight month that the 20-year-old phenom earned such honors and the third consecutive month a Blue Jackets player has won the award. Center Derick Brassard, who will miss the remainder of the 2008-09 campaign due to a dislocated right shoulder, was named the league's top rookie for the month of October.

Mason posted a 7-5-0 record with a microscopic 1.41 goals-against average, .950 save percentage and three shutouts in 12 games last month. A third-round pick in 2006, Mason notched a franchise-record three consecutive shutouts to close out the calendar year. The only other rookie to record shutouts in three straight starts during the NHL's modern era was Glenn Hall with the Blackhawks in 1955.

Others considered for the November honor included St. Louis center Patrik Berglund, Anaheim right wing Bobby Ryan, Boston left wing Blake Wheeler, Florida center Michael Frolik and Chicago right wing Kris Versteeg.
